Alternative Therapies - Holistic Healing

I was curious how many survivors have turned to alternative therapies for help?

If you have which kind have you used? Was it helpful? If so how?

If you have, did you go to someone who was Jewish?

If not, did they talk about their spiritual beliefs to you? I'm asking because that was my experience, and was curious if others have had the same problems come up.

I've used acupuncture to help me with my depression. It's also been helpful with my flashbacks. I wish I could understand how it works. At least for me it does.

I started off dealing with various forms of alternative therapies due to a back injury. I was amazed to find it helpful for my PTSD symptoms.

The only downfall to all of it is that a lot of the practitioners I went to are practicing all sorts of strange religions. It was interesting to hear them talk, but I also felt funny being Jewish. I'm not religious, but it still didn't seem to kosher.

Has anyone ever done Reiki? I tried it but it really creeped me out. I know it's a form of energy work, but I really don't understand it. I have a friend who is a Reiki master, and she was trying to explain it to me. She said something about the energy she uses comes from Dr. Mikau Usui, who has passed away. Before she starts working on someone she calls for his energy to come to her. I might not be saying this correctly, and not sure if anyone out there understands what I'm trying to say? I guess I'm just curious how Kosher it is for Jewish Survivors to be using this form of alternative therapy?

I used accupuncture to help me with PTSD symptoms. I also tried rolfing which is a kind of intense body work,
but it triggered stuff for me. I would have continued though but couldn't because it was too expensive.

How about cranial sacral work? Anyone else try it for PTSD?

First I want to say congratulations for starting this blog, and I hope it is a helpful resource for others out there.

Aside from regular therapy, I did go to a holistic practioner who used aromatherapy and 'energy balancing'. I did go in there a bundle of nerves and came out quite refreshed and more centered, even though I was skeptical to begin with. She lent me a guided meditation CD for healing PTSD, but I found that ended up triggering things so did not use it. I would go back again, but it's too expensive for my budget at this time and of course, isn't covered by insurance.

I'd say we should explore whatever avenues are available and work for us, whether traditional or alternative.

I use aroma therapy all the time. Lavender is great to help me relax, and peppermint gives me tons of energy. When I'm driving my car during rush hour I use an oil defuser in my cigarette lighter. I combine both lavender and peppermint. So I end up getting a mellow energy.

I've heard that Reiki is halachically not allowed. I've tried many different modalities: chiropractic, massage, traeger, accupuncture, feldenkrais, meditation, cranio-sacral, tai chi, etc! There are so many paths to healing, the human body is truly a wonderful "machine". There's a book named "Discovering the Body's Wisdom" by Mirka Knaster that discusses different body therapies. The bottom line, I believe, is to trust your body's wisdom in determining if something is the right thing for you. If you feel comfortable with it and it works, stay with it until you feel you got as much as you want out of it. Sometimes you just need to change to a different practitioner, sometimes a new modality is in order.
