Listing Alleged and Convicted Sex Offenders?

I'm not sure how many people have visited The Awareness Center's web page called "Clergy Abuse: Rabbis, Cantors & Other Trusted Officials"?

If you haven't been there yet, pay the site a visit. http://www.theawarenesscenter.org/clergyabuse.html

I think we should have a discussion of how survivors feel about the page. I know it's quite controversial amongst rabbis, but since we are the ones who have lived through the abuse, I figured we should have the opportunity to discuss it. Please feel free to click on where it says comments and let your voices be heard.

I am amazed at the amount of courage The Awareness Center has to do this. Finally someone is doing something to make our communities safer!

It is a good, and necessary, thing.

I wish that more could be done. Why is it that none of the rabbinical associations are doing the same thing? Don't they care about protecting more people from being hurt?

It's a very courageous and important way to stop abuse. People are concerned that thier might be someone up there. I think that anyone who has allegations against them and continues to have access to children should have to undergo an evaluation by proffessionals who are trained to evaluate potential offenders. If they believe that they are then what do they have to be afraid of?

I think that it's appropriate to post info about people charged with crimes or convicted of crimes. However, I'm not really comfortable with posting info about people who have been aquited or charges dropped. I definitly do not agree with posting names of people simply on rumor and/or speculation.

I think there's a problem with the legal system in the US, and else where. As you know it is almost impossible to prove a crime that happens in secrecy, with no witnesses present. How many times are individuals charged with sexual crimes and let go due to lack of evidence? Or the charges are dropped due to witness tampering? Also how often is it that there's cases of sexual misconduct that take years to come out of the closet due to various fears? Unless we know the details of why charges were dropped, or know the details of why someone was acquitted, I think the cases should stay up.

I visited the site, Clergy Abuse: Rabbis, Cantors and Other Trusted Officials. It seems to me The Awareness Center uses words like "allegedly" and "alleged" too many times.
