UPDATE: Case of Eugene Aronin - Chicago, IL

Does this make any sense to you?
Can someone explain it to me?

Eugene Aronin is a convicted sex offender. He is currently living in a northwest suburb of Chicago. people are still inviting this individual into their homes for shabbos in the orthodox community of West Rogers Park in Chicago. From what I've been told, he is around children unescorted.

Eugene Loub Aronin, is former Hartford County school counselor (Lubbock, TX), who was convicted of having sexually assaulted a 10-year-old boy.

Does anyone know if he has undergone sex offender treatment with a qualified therapist? Would his therapist sign a note saying he was no longer a threat to children?

Has the rabbis in the Jewish Community of Chicago set up any guidelines for Aronin to follow?

Is Eugene (Gene) Aronin allowed in minyan's where children are present?

After reading all the blogs regarding Jewish Sex Offenders and the lack of responce from the Rabbi's, I truly have lost all my faith and respect for the Rabbi's. It seem that speak, hear, see no evil, turning their combined heads the other way; forgiving is more important than punishment and the victims be damned. Wake up Rabbi's, this is the real world. Shun these perverts, protect our children. Open your eyes to today's real world.

I also want to better understand why parents with children would bring a convicted sex offender into their homes?

I also want to understand how parents could send their children to a school (yeshiva) when an alleged sex offender is running it?

Don't they care they are putting their children into harms way?

I knew Gene rather well while attending Project SEED in Buffalo Grove, IL, the town I grew up in. Gene and I spent many Shabbat afternoons studying Torah together. I was around the ages of 15 to 18 while Gene and I spent signifigant time together. In addition I witnessed him interact with the Rabbi's children and those of other community members. Not once did I even consider him to be a sex offender. He truly is comitted to a religious life, but now that I have read this I am shocked. It was not until this very minute that I even thought him capable of doing such a thing. I am in shock and don't know what to say other than I am shocked.

I want to update what I previously wrote. I spent countless hours with Eugene, or Yehoshua as we called him. Much of this time was around children. I never saw him be anything but kind and gentle to all kids of all ages. I know of one case where he bought toys for one young boy whose father was absentee and mother was struggling to make ends meat.

Surely he has a poor history. It's terrible and horrible. However it has been over 20 years since his conviction and he has received years of psychiatric care. Some of that care has been inpatient care. I know as he was hospitalized a few times for depression (he checked himself in).

That said, I still need to digest how I feel about him. We havent spoken in a few years, but I will say last I saw he was a nice man who, in my opinion, was no longer a threat.

In response to the comment made about how the "Rabbis" are doing nothing about such cases, such a statement is quite misleading and inaccurate. As an orthodox Rabbi and a clinical psychologist, I and others in our community are on a constant look out for any known sex-offenders and tolerate no such behavior. Just because I am the only rabbi to have encountered this site and decided to post a comment does not indicate that we, as rabbis and the community at large, are doing nothing about it. We are doing everything in our power to ensure that our children (I am a parent of 2 young children)are safe no matter where they may be.

Unfortunately we have not gotten to the point of putting our children first. We should be posting the conviction and photo's so that people are aware. If people don't know, they will continue inviting the CRIMINAL over. We have gotten too accustomed to hiding this as it does shame our religion, however, our kids suffer and enough is truly enough.
